Rocky Mount has its roots in the agricultural and tobacco industries, but today it has a thriving arts community housed among renovated, historically significant buildings, including the Maria V. Howard Arts Center, a Children’s Museum and Science Center, a community theater at the Imperial Center for Arts and Sciences, and the Thelonious Monk Plaza, named after Rocky Mount native and jazz musician Thelonious Monk, in the newly renovated Douglas Block area. For outdoor devotees, Rocky Mount’s parks, trails, and waterways provide ample chances for biking, hiking, and kayaking.
